Spicy Tuna Crispy Hashbrown Bites

So we’ve all seen the very popular spicy tuna crispy rice bites from NOBU but have you seen it made with hashbrowns? You get that same crunch of the crispy rice but then you get the fluffy saltiness of the potato that pairs so well with the creamy avocado and spicy tuna. It also saves you a whole hour of time with this hack!

The blog already has a spicy tuna crispy rice bite recipe but if you’re looking for an easier version that is just as delicious, you got to try making it with hashbrowns. I thought of this little hack when I was brainstorming creative recipes I can make with potatoes as everyone seems to always go crazy for potatoes and crunch sounds. There has also been a trend on TikTok of people using hashbrowns in replacement of bread to make avocado toast and that’s where the idea came to use it instead of rice to make this NOBU inspired recipe.

How to Make The Spicy Tuna?

Making the spicy tuna is the easiest part! The most important ingredient you’ll need is sushi grade or sashimi grade tuna to make it safe to be eaten raw. I go to my local Japanese fish market to buy the freshest high-quality tuna I can find.

Chop it up into very small pieces and to it, add:

  • Kewpie mayonnaise
  • sriracha
  • sesame oil
  • low-sodium soy sauce
  • lime juice
  • chopped scallions

I did not add scallions because my husband hates them but I added them to my own serving and it makes all the difference if you love green onions. Mix it all together and it’s ready to go!

How to Make Spicy Mayo

This is the easiest part and also the best part because the sauce is pure heaven! You can use it in these bowls and then save any leftovers, IF ANY, and use it in wraps, with sushi, or even a salad topping.

All you need is a small bowl and to it add mayo, lemon juice, sesame oil, sugar, and Sriracha or Sambal. I used to always use Sriracha in my spicy mayo but recently I tried sambal which is the Vietnamese hot chili paste and it was so much better. I buy it from Target or any large supermarket/Asian market. Depending on how spicy you like it, you can add less or more hot sauce.

Sesame oil is optional but highly recommended. A little dash goes a long way as it has a very strong nutty and earthy taste that helps to brighten the creamy sauce up.

The Hashbrowns

My favorite hashbrowns to use are the frozen ones from Trader Joe’s. They crisp up so beautifully in the air fryer or oven so no frying involved. Feel free to use any frozen hashbrowns from the store though.

  • To make in the air fryer: Preheat to 400°F. Place the hasbrowns patties in the air fryer, making sure not to overcrowd them. You don’t have to spray them with oil but I like to so they turn out even more crispy. Cook for 6-8 minutes, flip over, and cook another 6 to 8 minutes until golden brown and crispy all around.
  • To make in the oven: Preheat oven to 425°F. Place patties on a wire rack or lined baking tray and bake for 24-26 minutes, flipping after 12 minutes. Cook to a light golden color or until golden brown and crispy all around.

Once cooked to perfection, cut the hashbrown into 2 or 3 pieces across, depending on how big or small you want the bites to be. I prefer 3 pieces.

Add avocado on top, then spicy tuna, then spicy mayo, and finally a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds.
