Crispy Cheese Dumplings

The best way to upgrade any dumplings is to make them CRISPY CHEESE dumplings! They pack the most incredible crunch and the salty, umami taste of the cheese compliments the dumplings so well. You only need one ingredient and 10 minutes for this game-changing method to prepare your dumplings!

For a while, crispy lattice dumplings were trending on TikTok and although they look amazing and I’m sure delicious, something about the cornstarch mixture really threw me off. So I started thinking, how can I recreate that crispy lattice but with a different ingredient. And that’s when it hit me to use cheese! After the first bite, I literally told my husband this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. And I still stand by that. Can’t wait for you to try this crispy combination now!

How to Prepare the Dumplings

For this recipe, you can use homemade dumplings or just buy your favorite from the freezer section of the grocery story. I recently tried Bibigo’s Mandu which are Korean style dumplings and I loved them. They’re a lot larger than most dumplings so the filling to wrapper ratio was perfect!

The method to preparing dumplings for this recipe is pan-frying, not boiling or steaming.

Just add about 1/4 cup of vegetable oil to a nonstick pan. For one batch of this recipe, I used 8 dumplings to fill up the circle design. Once the oil is hot, add the dumplings, making sure to leave space between them. Heat on medium-high heat for 8 minutes, turning each side over every 2-3 minutes or until all sides are golden brown. Once golden, take off the pan. Remove any excess oil.

Making the Crispy Cheese Lattice

To a non-stick pan, add just a small splash of oil or oil spray over medium heat. Sprinkle the pan with cheddar cheese in an even later so the whole pan’s surface is covered. Allow the cheese to just melt and then add the cooked dumplings on top in a circular design so that they’re stuck on to the cheese. Let the cheese continue to cook.

First it will start to bubble and then it will start to turn golden and lose its stretchiness. Finally, you’ll start to see parts of the cheese turn a bit red or brown. When you shake the pan, the whole thing should move together as one piece and that’s when it’s done. Slide the cheese dumplings off the pan and onto a plate gently.

Garnish with chopped parsley and grated parmesan and enjoy! I love serving it with a dipping sauce like chipotle aioli or sweet chili sauce.

Here’s how I make my chipotle sauce featured in the pic:

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1/2 to 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons adobo paste

Just combine all the ingredients above in a small bowl until smooth and that’s it!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (more or less as needed)
  • 8 frozen dumplings
  • vegetable oil or oil spray
  • chopped parsley
  • grated parmesan

Instructions

  1. To a frying pan over medium-high heat, add a generous splash of oil (I used 3 tablespoons to 1/4 cup). Once the oil is hot, add the frozen dumplings. Cook on one side until beautifully golden and then flip over so the other side can crisp up, about 2-3 minutes each side. Once the dumplings are cooked, take out the pan.
  2. To the same pan over medium heat, oil the surface to avoid sticking if necessary and add the cheese in a layer to cover the whole pan evenly.
  3. Once the cheese starts melting, add the dumplings on top in a circular design so that the dumplings stick to the melting cheese.
  4. Continue cooking the cheese. First it will start to bubble and then it will start to turn golden and lose its stretchiness. Finally, you'll start to see parts of the cheese turn a bit red or brown. When you shake the pan, the whole thing should move together as one piece and that's when it's done. Slide the cheese dumplings off the pan and onto a plate gently.
  5. Garnish with chopped parsley and grated parmesan and enjoy! I love serving it with a dipping sauce like chipotle aioli or sweet chili sauce.
Tips & Notes
  • Feel free to swap the cheddar cheese with mozzarella, Monterrey jack, or pepper jack but cheddar definitely works best. You can also use a combination of cheeses.
  • Depending on the size of your pan, you may need more or less cheese and more or less dumplings. I used a large pan and fit 8 dumplings all around.
